FIELD GUIDE 13 / 15
Create, join and switch companies
Choose the right organization before opening teams; company membership is explicit and separate from Slack identity.
Product guide 2 sections
Choose a setup path
- 01New web-only group: sign in, open the organization selector above the sidebar navigation, choose Create organization, enter a name of 2–80 characters and confirm. You become its company owner; Slack is optional.
- 02Existing company/team: open the team invitation and use the invited account. Do not create a new company as a workaround for missing access. Ask the inviter for a fresh link if needed.
- 03Slack-first group: open /slack/onboarding, authorize the intended workspace, then complete the explicit company-owner setup. Installation, company ownership and personal Slack linking are distinct.
- 04After creation or accepted membership, select the organization, then open Teams to create or join the appropriate team. Creating a company does not populate it with everyone from your Slack workspace.
Keep in mind
Company and organization refer to the same tenant here; the sidebar uses Organizations and Create organization. Each has independent access and work. Do not merge companies or identities merely because emails match.

Switch and check your selection
- 01Open the organization selector at the top of the sidebar. On mobile, open the navigation sidebar first.
- 02Choose a company where you have active membership. The app reloads Dashboard and clears the previous company's cached view.
- 03Check the displayed company name before changing members, Slack settings or billing. For example, select Cedar Studio before editing its Website Launch tasks, not your other company River Workshop.
- 04A saved last choice is a convenience, not access permission. A valid selection in the current browser may take precedence; a sole active company may be selected automatically. If none can be restored, select one explicitly.
Keep in mind
The remembered-choice database change has published-runtime migration evidence, but end-to-end sign-in restoration still needs verification. Removed or suspended membership cannot be recovered by a saved selection. If the selector is empty, verify your account and invitation with the company owner.
